Flame Tree Barbecue - Disney's Animal Kingdom

Earlier today, we had lunch at Flame Tree Barbecue, a quick service restaurant in Disney's Animal Kingdom.  It was closed for refurbishment earlier this year, but it reopened this summer with a new look and some new menu items.

I did stop at the Discovery Island Allergy Kiosk before deciding where to go for lunch, but their Allergy-Friendly Dining Tips pamphlet does not have up-to-date information about Flame Tree Barbecue.

Flame Tree does not have an allergy-friendly menu yet, so I had to talk to a manager and go through the allergy binder with her.  After discussions with cast members at Discovery Island Kiosk and Flame Tree Barbecue, I am pretty sure that all of their entrees can be modified to make them gluten free.  The cornbread would have to be left off of many of the dishes, and they have Local Oven gluten free buns for the pulled pork sandwich and smoked turkey breast sandwich.

I ended up choosing one of their new entrees, the watermelon salad with arugula and feta, minus the onions.  I loved everything about this salad.  The watermelon was nice and fresh, and it was so delicious paired together with feta and the peppery arugula.  I also enjoyed the vinaigrette dressing that came with it, which was served on the side.

I also ordered a side of french fries for myself and my family, because they can no longer be substituted for any of the sides that come with the entrees.  They are made in a dedicated fryer, separate from the onion rings.

Flame Tree has  the standard allergy-friendly brownies and cookies found in most quick service restaurants in the theme parks, but I decided to order their chocolate mousse, because I love chocolate, and there was no warning about wheat or gluten when I looked in the allergy binder.  I thought it was very good, and would definitely order it again.

The last time we ate at Flame Tree Barbecue, I ordered the ribs and chicken combo, substituting french fries for the baked beans and coleslaw that used to be served with this dish.  This entree is currently being served with baked beans, which are gluten free, and cornbread, which is not.  Be sure to ask for fruit or carrots instead of the cornbread, or maybe they would give you extra baked beans.

My daughters enjoyed their pulled pork sandwiches, but as usual, were freaked out by the birds that wander around the tables at Flame Tree Barbecue.

September 23, 2018 Update

Allergy-friendly options at Flame Tree Barbecue are now listed on Disney's website here, and you can mobile order using the My Disney Experience app. French fries are not listed as a gluten free option, but I did speak to a cast member on a previous visit, who told me that they do have a dedicated fryer.  I suggest that you ask to speak to a manager if you are interested in ordering french fries.

You can read more about Flame Tree Barbecue, and view their menu and hours on Disney's website here.

What are your favorite gluten free options at Flame Tree Barbecue?

  1. The menu is such a great help in the planning I am doing for our family. We are gluten and dairy free. You have provided such helpful, thorough information, and I am very grateful. Thank you. Do you by chance know if you are able to order this to go?

    1. I asked Sarah from Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free at WDW. We don’t think To Go containers are available, but you could ask.
