Trattoria al Forno Breakfast - Disney's BoardWalk

This post was last updated May 31, 2017

This morning, my daughters and I had breakfast at Trattoria al Forno on Disney's BoardWalk with my friend Sarah from Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free at WDW.

Trattoria al Forno, a table service restaurant serving Italian food, recently adopted allergy-friendly breakfast and dinner menus.  The new allergy-friendly menus that are being introduced at Disney World and Disneyland between April and September list options for people with gluten/wheat, milk, egg, soy, fish/shellfish, and peanut/tree nut allergies.

Trattoria al Forno's new allergy-friendly breakfast menu lists the following entrees as being safe for gluten/wheat allergies:
  • Two eggs any style with potatoes and choice of bacon or chicken sausage
  • Frittata with roasted peppers, prosciutto, and Pecorino Romano cheese
  • Cured Italian meats, tomatoes, hard-boiled egg, and cheese fonduta
  • Poached eggs with fennel sausage, mascarpone polenta, and Sunday gravy
  • Seasonal fresh fruit bowl
  • Yogurt with berries
  • Waffle with choice of bacon or chicken sausage
  • Kid's meals - egg white, spinach and tomato omelet served with potatoes; All-American breakfast with bacon, eggs, and allergy-friendly toast; fresh fruit plate; waffles

Their previous gluten free menu listed additional options, like the scrambled eggs with tomato, basil, and fresh mozzarella, served with breakfast potatoes, and choice of bacon or chicken sausage.  Chef Brad told me that this dish, which is one of our favorites, can still be made gluten free.

I decided to order Mickey waffles, but on the allergy-friendly menu, there was no mention of the espresso-mascarpone cream that they are usually served with.  Because the waffles are listed as safe for people with milk allergies, I guess the espresso-mascarpone cream was left off of the new menu, but I didn't want to miss out on one of my favorite toppings for Mickey waffles.  In my opinion, one of the big downfalls of the new allergy-friendly menus is that you might miss out on ingredients that you can eat, but they are left off of dishes to make them free of more of the top 8 allergens.  This is why I suggest you look at the regular and the allergy-friendly menus, and ask to speak to a chef if you think a dish can be adapted to suit your needs.

You can read my previous breakfast review of Trattoria al Forno here.  My daughters and I loved our food this morning, like we always do, and Chef Brad and our server Jenna made our dining experience a magical one.

April 7, 2016 Update

This morning, I had breakfast at Trattoria al Forno with my mother-in-law.  We both ordered scrambled eggs with tomato, basil, and fresh mozzarella served with breakfast potatoes.  I chose bacon, while she had the chicken sausage, which she said was really good.  This dish is usually served with a croissant, but I asked for gluten free toast with a side of butter instead.  The scrambled eggs were so delicious, and I enjoyed everything else on my plate.  This dish was not on the allergy-friendly menu, which remains the same from my last visit.

May 31, 2017 Update

Earlier this year, the Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast with characters from Tangled and The Little Mermaid was introduced at Trattoria al Forno.  I was disappointed for several reasons.  We used to love the quiet relaxed atmosphere of breakfast at our home Disney Vacation Club resort.  Reservations are much harder to get now, and the cost of breakfast has increased.  One of my favorite breakfast dishes is no longer on the menu, and my daughters will never want to eat there again, because they do not like character meals.

Mickey waffles are only on the kids' menu now, and they are not listed as gluten-friendly.  I will miss Trattoria al Forno's Mickey waffles with espresso-mascarpone, one of my favorite waffle toppings at Disney.

The Bon Voyage Adventure Breakfast includes a plate of pastries for everyone to share, a choice of one starter, and a choice of one entree.  Only two starters are available, and fruit salad looks to be the only safe option.  Gluten free entrees include Choice of Two Eggs with bacon or sausage, the Italian Scramble, Steak & Eggs, and the Golden Frittata.  Heather, my blog reader who provided me with these two photos from the new breakfast, was given a gluten free muffin and scones for pastries.  A big thank you to Heather for allowing me to share these pictures.

You can read more about Trattoria al Forno, view their menus and hours, and make advance dining reservations on Disney's website here.

What are your favorite gluten free dishes at Trattoria al Forno?
