The Wave Breakfast - Disney's Contemporary Resort

Yesterday, my daughters and I had breakfast at The Wave...of American Flavors, a table service restaurant at Disney's Contemporary Resort.

The Wave recently adopted allergy-friendly breakfast, lunch and dinner menus, which list options for people with gluten/wheat, milk, egg, soy, fish/shellfish, and peanut/tree nut allergies.

The allergy-friendly breakfast menu lists the spinach-tomato scramble as safe for gluten/wheat, fish/shellfish, milk, and peanut/tree nut allergies.  On the regular menu, this entree is listed as spinach, tomato, and feta cheese scrambled eggs, but I guess they dropped the feta to make it safe for people with milk allergies when they put in on the allergy-friendly menu.  We tried this dish with the feta cheese the last time we ate at The Wave for breakfast, which you can read about here.  It is always a good idea to get an allergy-friendly menu and a regular menu so you can see what ingredients originally came with the dish, which you might still be able to have, depending on your allergies.

Steel-cut oatmeal is on the adult allergy-friendly menu as being safe for gluten/wheat allergies, but I would confirm with a chef that they are using certified gluten free oats before ordering this dish.

My girls and I ordered three gluten free breakfast dishes so we could share our food.

I was so excited to try the sweet potato hash with poached eggs, tomato-fennel sauce, arugula, and chicken sausage.  As I typed the description from the menu for this review, I realized that we didn't get any arugula with our dish.  This entree was our one disappointment, because I thought the hash was very bland and underseasoned.  I would have preferred smaller, crispier pieces of sweet potato in the hash, like Kouzzina used to make.  I enjoyed the chicken sausage, which was a little bit spicy.  It was really delicious dipped in some syrup, which is a must for me with all of my breakfast meats.  We had the tomato-fennel sauce served on the side, because I thought we wouldn't like it, but it was pretty good.

Our "Belgian Waffle" ended up being four gluten free Mickey waffles.  They are served with fruit compote and a choice of bacon, pork, or chicken sausage.  The waffles were cooked well, and my daughter Emma and I both enjoyed the fruit compote, which was made from a mix of berries.  Once we ran out of fruit compote, I dipped my bacon and waffles in some syrup.

My daughter Katie really wanted the steak and eggs, which is a 4 oz tenderloin filet served with two eggs of your choice, Wave breakfast potatoes, and Udi's toast.  The Wave breakfast potatoes and steak were seasoned and cooked well, and Katie loved eating her poached eggs on top of them.

The next time we dine at The Wave for breakfast, we will definitely be skipping the sweet potato hash, and ordering the spinach, tomato, and feta cheese scrambled eggs instead.  We enjoyed the waffles with fruit compote, and the steak and eggs, so I am sure my daughters will be asking for those on our next visit.

The Wave...of American Flavors is known for healthful dishes that use a lot of locally sourced ingredients.  You can read more about The Wave, and make advance dining reservations on Disney's website here.
