About Me

Updated April 17, 2021

Welcome to Alexis's Gluten Free Adventures, formerly known as Gluten Free in Orlando. I was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2008, right before we moved to Orlando. You can read the story of my celiac and hypothyroidism diagnoses here.

After eight years in Orlando, we moved to California for five years, but this summer, we are moving back to Orlando. I have decided to take a break from my 23 year teaching career, and have joined Wishful Wanderings Travel as a travel planner specializing in Disney destinations, cruises, Universal parks & resorts, and beyond.

My husband Mitch and I are both from Pittsburgh, which is where we met, got married, and had our identical twin daughters.

I would definitely consider myself to be a foodie. My whole family loves ethnic food, especially Italian. Both my husband and I grew up eating a lot of Italian food, because of the influence of our Italian grandmothers, and it's the main cuisine that I like to cook at home.

I am the only person in our family of four with celiac disease, but I have an aunt who was diagnosed with celiac many years before I was. I only cook gluten free meals in our house, but my husband and daughters eat gluten-filled foods when we dine out, and when they are at school.

This blog has been such a blessing to me, and I hope it is to you as well. I have made some great GFFs (gluten free friends), and I find myself trying new recipes and restaurants because of my blog.

Welcome to Alexis's Gluten Free Adventures!

  2. Hey Alexis,
My name is Hannah and I love your Gluten-Free blog! I'm 18 years old, living in Houston and I write my own gluten-free blog at hannahsglutenfreeadventure.com! Its about the different gluten-free recipes I've created (and tried out) and different restaurants here in Houston, and other locations I have visited, that have gluten-free options. I really admire you and what you have accomplished through your blogging. It would be great if you could give me some tips on how to get sponsors and how to get my name out in the "gluten-free world". Thanks so much, keep blogging!

    Best,
    Hannah

  4. Hi Alexis, I'm celiac and lactose intolerant, I'm from Brazil, I always see your posts and they are realy helpful. I love your product reviews and recipes.
I'm Au Pair from AuPairCare(a young foreign person, typically a woman, who helps with light housework and child care in exchange for room, board and cultural exchange), it's difficult to find host families that eat gluten free but they usualy tell me that's easy to find safe products to eat in the USA and your tips help me a lot. If you know some host family that is needing an Au Pair (AuPairCare) gluten free let me know :) Thanks for all your tips again and I'll keep visiting your blog to see the new posts!!! :)

    all the best

  5. Hi Alexis,

I found your blog while searching for gluten free options for my upcoming trip to Disney World! I had to write to you to say that I'm so excited I found your page, because I too have celiac disease and hypothyroidism and it's always so great to hear other people's inspirational stories. I was diagnosed as hypothyroid when I was 16 and celiac at 22, but it's been an amazing journey and I learn so much from bloggers. I look forward to trying out some of your suggestions in Disney! Thank you! - Kristin

  7. People here laugh when I say that the US has the best food in the world. I bet they will change their mind if they try the all-you-care-to-enjoy skillet Whispering Canyon. I am from Sri_Lanka BTW.

  8. Just wanted to say Thank you! In Disney World right now and every dining decision I make is based off whether or not you have reviewed the location. It's been very helpful to be able to walk into a quick service or table service knowing what my options are ahead of time and whether the food was any good. Keep up the great work!

  10. Hi Alexis,

I just wanted to thank you for this great resource! Our 11 year old son was diagnosed with Celiac last August, a few months before our already planned Disney vacation. We were so overwhelmed and concerned about what we would eat at Disney. I am so glad I found your blog. It is invaluable and made our trip so much easier and worry free. We are heading back down in April and truly appreciate your insights yet again.

    Thank you so much,

    Eric

  11. Great blog. Thank you for this. I'm a coeliac (we spell it differently) from London with two little girls who love going to Orlando. I thought my diagnosis last year would really put a downer on future trips but you show how much there is out there.

  12. Hello Alexis.
I wanted to say a huge "THANK YOU" to you.
We have just come back from Disneyworld, We have been planning for this trip for the past 18 months and I have been following your blogs with great interest. Your restaurant write up's have been so valuable to us when choosing where to eat.
My husband & eldest son were thrilled with the vast selection of food that was available to them. Over here in England gluten free options in restaurants are limited, but slowly they are getting better.
Good luck with your move to California, sending you & your family our best wishes.

  13. Beautiful family! I am super excited to find your blog and expertise. My son and recently my husband have both been diagnosed with celiac disease. We're visiting Disney over Christmas break. We're a family of 6 (four children) and enjoy all kinds of different food. I also LOVE the Find me Gluten Free App. I will definitely be using and pinning your site as we plan our trip! My husband and I met in Pittsburgh at Duquesne University! Thank you!

  15. I just wanted to add to what everyone else has already said... I have an 11 yo dtr with Celiac, and we just returned from Orlando last week. 6 parks in 6 days! Universal and Disney... your reccommendations were spot on! I had a dining reservation each day we were there, at each park, and they were all so great to her! Especially Chef Ken at the Plaza Restaurant at MK, he was awesome! And we all had ice cream sundaes, lol.
But we also loved Mama Melrose's at Hollywood Studios, delicious!
We did Raglan Road at Disney Springs, Mythos and Confisco Grille at IOA, and La Hacienda de San Angel and a quick dining stop at Epcot.
Even found gluten free treats at the Sweet Shop in Hollywood Studios! THANK YOU!!!!

  16. Alexis,

I just wanted to thank you for the work you do. 3/4 members of my family must eat gluten free and your site has been my go-to since my son's diagnosis. As frequent travelers, we have navigated Disney, Disney cruises and this fall Universal with less stress and anxiety since following your blog.

    Thank you!
