The Plaza Restaurant - Disney's Magic Kingdom

There are two reasons that we go to The Plaza Restaurant in the Magic Kingdom at Disney World - milkshakes and Chef Ken.

The Plaza Restaurant is a table service restaurant located at the end of Main Street, U.S.A. I had lunch there with my daughters in July, during our summer trip to Disney World.

We don't go as often as we used to, because Skipper Canteen is our favorite table service restaurant at the Magic Kingdom, and we no longer live in Orlando.

Gluten free options on The Plaza's allergy-friendly menu:

  • Appetizers - wedge salad, loaded fries or chips
  • Entrees (served with your choice of seasonal vegetables, homemade chips, or french fries) - grilled chicken sandwich, fried green tomato sandwich, chicken strawberry salad, Angus chuck burger
  • Dessert - banana split, The Plaza Restaurant Sundae, fresh fruit

Gluten-friendly kids' meals:

  • Appetizers - sliced apples, grapes
  • Entrees - hamburger, grilled cheese sandwich, chicken tenders
  • Desserts - fresh fruit

We had a pretty big breakfast at Be Our Guest just a few hours before our early lunch reservations at The Plaza, so we were not that hungry. I had hoped to have a kid's portion of the new gluten free chicken nuggets that are available at some Magic Kingdom restaurants, but Chef Ken told me he only had Ian's chicken tenders.

I ended up getting the chicken tenders with a side of chips at The Plaza, because I felt bad not ordering anything but a milkshake, then we went to Columbia Harbour House about an hour later to try their amazing new gluten free chicken nuggets, which are the best I have had since my celiac diagnosis ten years ago. They are significantly better than the Ian's chicken tenders, but I preferred the chips at The Plaza to the fries at Columbia Harbour House.

At The Plaza, there are more gluten free options than what is listed on their allergy-friendly menu. Chef Ken made me a vanilla and chocolate milkshake with extra cherries, which is one of my favorite desserts at Disney World. He always scoops the ice cream from a fresh container to avoid cross contamination. Chef Ken has also made me a cookies & cream milkshake, and a gluten free cheese steak sandwich, which you can read about in my previous review here.

Chef Ken is one of the best chefs for special diets at Disney World. He makes every dining experience at The Plaza a magical one. Keep in mind that I have heard about some not so great dining experiences my blog readers have had at The Plaza when Chef Ken is not there. Your best bet for seeing him is to go for lunch Tuesday through Saturday.

Not only did I get to see Chef Ken in July, but I also got a chance to meet one of my blog readers from our hometown of Pittsburgh, and her sweet celiac son, who just happened to be at The Plaza the same time we were.

Overall, we enjoyed our dining experience at The Plaza. My gluten-eating daughters both had a cup of wedding soup, and shared a cookies & cream milkshake, which were not gluten free.

You can read more about The Plaza, view their menu and hours, and make advance dining reservations on Disney's website.

What are your favorite gluten free options at The Plaza Restaurant? I have heard the fried green tomato sandwich is amazing, but I have not tried it yet.
