Satu'li Canteen - Disney's Animal Kingdom

In July, my daughters and I stopped at Satu'li Canteen, a quick service restaurant in Pandora - The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

I wanted to have lunch at Nomad Lounge, one of my favorite restaurants at Disney World, but my girls wanted to eat at Satu'li Canteen, so we decided to go to both.

My gluten-eating daughters wanted their order to be marked gluten free, so I could taste their bowl.

Gluten-friendly build-your-own bowl options at Satu'li Canteen include:

  • Choose your protein - slow-roasted sliced grilled beef, chopped wood-grilled chicken, chili-spiced crispy-fried tofu
  • Choose your base - rice and black beans, red and sweet potato hash, mixed whole grain and rice, hearty salad
  • Choose your sauce - charred green onion vinaigrette, creamy herb dressing

The mixed whole grain and rice is not listed as milk-friendly, but my friend Sarah from Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free at WDW recently dined at Satu'li Canteen, checked the allergy-binder, and did not see any dairy in this base. You can read her review here.

My daughter Emma wanted chicken, and Katie wanted steak, so we ordered both. For a base, we chose red and sweet potato hash. My girls were interested in the black bean vinaigrette, which is not gluten free, while I wanted to try the charred green onion vinaigrette. The cast member who took our order suggested we order the gluten free sauce with our bowl, then ask for a side of the black bean vinaigrette when our meal was ready.

Our gluten-friendly meal was served on a different color tray than what other customers were receiving. Overall, we liked, but did not love our bowl, and we all agreed that the food is better at Nomad Lounge. For me, the biggest issue is the sauce. Satu'li Canteen's charred green onion vinaigrette cannot compare to the amazing sauces I have had at Fresh Kitchen and other build your own bowl restaurants. I prefer a fresher, less vinegary sauce, but we all enjoyed the hash, and the chicken and beef.

As far as quick service restaurants go, this would still be my top pick at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

We love Pandora, which TIME magazine recently named one of the World's Greatest Places, and Avatar Flight of Passage is the best theme park attraction on the planet!

Before Pandora - The World of Avatar opened, we rarely went to Disney's Animal Kingdom, but now, we visit it more than any other theme park at Disney World.

The fact that Nomad Lounge has gluten free churros, and amazing small plates and drinks, is also a factor of course. You can read my Nomad Lounge review here.

In July, we did not visit Pandora at night, but that is definitely on the agenda for our trip in November, because it is extra special in the evening with all the lights.

Look closely at the picture above and the picture below. Do you see the earth creature visiting Pandora?
