Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano - Disney's Hollywood Studios

In July, we had lunch at Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano in Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Mama Melrose's has always been our favorite table service restaurant at Hollywood Studios.

On the allergy-friendly menu, gluten-friendly appetizers include the oak-fired mussels, carne d'Italia flatbread, fresh mozzarella and vine-ripened tomatoes, mixed green salad, Mama's Caesar salad, and margherita flatbread. The last time I had flatbread at Mama Melrose's, they were using Udi's gluten free pizza crust.

Gluten-friendly entrees: shrimp pasta with a four-cheese sauce, polenta cake, wood-grilled chicken and penne pasta with a four-cheese sauce, spaghetti bolognese, and saltimbocca.

Gluten-friendly desserts include vanilla or chocolate gelato, vanilla or chocolate soy milk nondairy frozen dessert, cheesecake with strawberry sauce (a no sugar added dessert), flourless chocolate cake, and lemon sorbet (a no sugar added dessert).

I love that Mama Melrose's serves Deanna's gluten free rolls, my favorite gluten free rolls at Disney World. I usually prefer my rolls with butter, but the olive oil with herbs at Mama Melrose's is so good, I don't even miss having butter.

I was surprised at how my rolls were served, and when I asked our server about it, she said they were still in the package to protect against cross contamination. Sadly, they were not heated as well as they usually are, so they were a little dry in the middle.

For an entree, I ordered the charred strip steak with four-cheese macaroni, pancetta, aged balsamic-shallot butter, and Chianti wine reduction. This dish is not marked as gluten-friendly on the allergy-friendly menu because of seasoning, so the chefs just seasoned my steak with salt and pepper. My husband and I thought the steak was great with the Chianti wine reduction poured on top of it, but my pasta was cold. The sauce on Mama Melrose's four-cheese macaroni is amazing, but it is definitely better hot. In the past, I was told that they use Barilla gluten free penne, one of my favorite brands of gluten free pasta.

These two pictures are from my oldest Mama Melrose's review. We have enjoyed the fresh mozzarella and vine-ripened tomatoes, and the mushroom flatbread on past visits. The mushroom flatbread is not on the allergy-friendly menu, but I am pretty sure it can still be made gluten free, because I have seen pictures of it on social media.

I considered getting the wood-grilled chicken and penne pasta with housemade four cheese sauce, which I have loved on past visits, but decided that I could have the best of both worlds by ordering steak with four cheese macaroni. I have always preferred steak to chicken, especially when it has a delicious sauce on top of it.

We usually order dessert at Mama Melrose's, but we passed this time around. because we had dinner plans later in the day, and did not want to eat too much.

I usually order the flourless chocolate cake and vanilla gelato to eat on top of it. I like this dessert, but I would not say that it is one of my favorites at Disney World.  It is very dense and fudgy, and in my opinion, it should be served with whipped cream or ice cream, and fresh berries or a berry sauce.

Overall, we enjoyed our lunch at Mama Melrose's, but decided to cancel our dinner reservations in November in favor of going back to STK, which was one of the best meals we had on our trip to Disney World in July.
