Casa de Tamales - Fresno, California

Last weekend, we went to Fresno, California to see Cirque du Soleil's TORUK - The First Flight, which is inspired by James Cameron's Avatar.

Before the show, we had lunch at Casa de Tamales, and visited the amazing Forestiere Underground Gardens.

I found Casa de Tamales, a 100% gluten free restaurant, on the Find Me Gluten Free app.  All of the tamales at this family-owned Mexican restaurant are made in-house from non-GMO corn.  Vegetarian and vegan options are noted on their menu.

Casa de Tamales has several artisan style sangrias to choose from.  I ordered The District, which contains fresh berry fruit, cranberry-apple juice, and red wine.  The main flavor I could taste was fresh raspberries, which made me happy, because I am not a huge fan of red wine.  The District was one of the best sangrias I have ever had, and I would definitely order it again.

My husband loved his creamy chicken poblano tamale and carnitas taco.  My daughters both liked their tamales, choosing the green tomatillo chicken and the shredded beef.  We all ordered beans and rice with our meals, which we enjoyed as well.

I chose the New Mexico chile pork tamale topped with red sauce, and a citrus marinated chicken taco.  I ate them with pineapple salsa, and a green spicy sauce that had me breathing fire.  Overall, I enjoyed my meal, but found myself wishing I had asked for some queso fresco, because I like cheese on my Mexican food.

For dessert, we ordered a sweet corn tamale with chipotle honey sauce, and a triple chocolate cake tamale, minus the walnuts, because I am the only one in my family that eats them.

The sweet corn tamale was delicious, and paired well with the chipotle honey sauce, but we all agreed that that the triple chocolate cake tamale was our favorite.

If we ever make it back to Fresno, I hope to try Casa de Tamales' pineapple chipotle lemonade, and their gluten free, vegan torta bread, which they were out of the day of our visit.

Some of the chain restaurants I have successfully eaten gluten free at, like BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse, California Pizza Kitchen, Red Robin, Blaze Pizza, P.F. Chang's, Outback Steakhouse, The Cheesecake Factory, In-N-Out Burger, Five Guys, and Chipotle have restaurants in Fresno, but I am so glad we opted to go to Casa de Tamales instead.

What are your favorite restaurants for gluten free dining in Fresno?
