Tres Pupusas

I have been on the lookout for Tres Pupusas since reading a review of them on Gluten-Free Jet Set.  Earlier this week, I finally found them in the frozen food section at the big Whole Foods on Turkey Lake Road.

Well, you might be wondering what a pupusa is.  These stuffed corn tortillas originated from El Salvador, and have delicious fillings like black bean & sweet corn, kale & pinto bean, green chile & cheese, spinach & cheese, and pinto bean & cheese.  They are made with organic, non-GMO corn masa and are naturally gluten free.

The box provides heating instructions for the stovetop and oven.  I chose the stovetop method, frying them in olive oil.  I guess I was supposed to heat them in the microwave first before frying them, but I didn't read that part carefully.  In the future, I will probably defrost them for a minute in the microwave before frying them.

Each box contains four pupusas, which range from 130 to 160 calories each.  I ate three for dinner, and my girls each ate two.

First up, we tried the black bean and corn, which we all loved.  I served them with mango salsa tonight, but they would be great with guacamole, or a vinaigrette based slaw.

We all enjoyed the kale & pinto bean pupusas, but agreed that the black bean & sweet corn were our favorite.

The kale & pinto bean contain organic corn masa (organic corn masa, trace of lime), water, pinto beans, olive oil, kale, salt, chili powder, chipotle powder, and onion powder.  They are manufactured in a facility that produces tree nuts and milk.

The black bean & sweet corn contain organic corn masa, water, black beans, organic corn, olive oil and salt.  Both varieties of pupusas we tried tonight are vegan.

I will update my review after we try the vegetarian green chile & cheese, which contain organic corn masa, water, mozzarella cheese, roasted green chiles, olive oil, jalapeno, and salt.  Hopefully, one of the Whole Foods in Orlando will start carrying the other two varieties of Tres Pupusas soon.  Currently, only the store on Turkey Lake Road is selling Tres Pupusas.

Very seldom do I find frozen meals that I can say that I love, but Tres Pupusas definitely fit in that category.  At $5.99 per box, I could easily feed my family dinner with three boxes of Tres Pupusas, or cook up two boxes for lunch.  They would also be a great dish to serve at a party.

You can read more about Tres Pupusas, and view their store locator on their website here.

April 11, 2015 Update

For lunch today, I made a box of green chile & cheese pupusas, but this time, I defrosted them in the microwave for two minutes before cooking them.  They were so good, and might be my new favorite variety of Tres Pupusas.  They contained the perfect amount of cheese, and the flavor of the chiles and jalapeno was very subtle.

March 12, 2017 Update

Yesterday, my daughters and I purchased two boxes of Tres Pupusas at the Whole Foods in Capitola, California.  We chose two varieties that we had not tried before.

We loved the chicken and cheese, which contains chicken, mozzarella cheese, and white beans.

We also liked the pinto bean & cheese, but found ourselves wishing we had bought some salsa to serve them with.

I did not feel like cleaning up a mess at lunch today, so I baked the pupusas on a parchment-lined baking sheet after brushing them with some grapeseed oil.  They are definitely better fried, because they get a little crispy on the outside as they brown, which was not happening in the oven until I added a little more oil and turned my oven to broil.

What is your favorite Tres Pupusas flavor?
