Captain's Grille Lunch - Disney's Yacht Club Resort

Earlier today, we had lunch at the Captain's Grille at Disney's Yacht Club Resort.  Our original plan was to dine at Whispering Canyon Cafe, but I changed our advance dining reservations this morning, because I wanted a healthy lunch, and was in the mood for salmon on Good Friday.

The Captain's Grille, a table service restaurant, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  We arrived at 11:30, right when breakfast service was ending, and lunch was beginning.  The Captain's Grille serves American fare in a nautical setting with a New England yacht club theme.

A chef came out to speak to me about gluten free options.  I had my heart set on the pan-roasted salmon, which could be made gluten free minus the fregola, which is a pasta similar to Israeli couscous.

The pan-roasted salmon is served with seasonal vegetables and citrus-arugula emulsion.  My salmon was seared nicely and cooked perfectly, though I found it to be a bit underseasoned, which I rectified at the table by adding a little salt.  The citrus-arugula emulsion was delicious, and nicely complimented the salmon and vegetables.  I wasn't too excited when the chef told me what the seasonal vegetables were, but I really enjoyed the beets, carrots, tomatoes, and green beans served with my salmon.  Overall, I really liked this dish, and would order it again.

My gluten-eating daughters both loved their gluten-filled meals.  Emma was happy with her orecchiette pasta with butter and grated cheese, which was not on the kids menu, but they made special for her.  Katie ordered the tomato and mozzarella sandwich with a chopped arugula vinaigrette off the regular menu.  The chef I spoke to said that this sandwich could be made gluten free with Udi's bread.

We ended up having strawberry marshmallow macarons for dessert at the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival, because I wasn't too excited by any of the gluten free options at the Captain's Grille.  They had pre-packaged gluten free cookies and brownies, ice cream, and angel food cake.  I would have liked to have tried the angel food cake, but it is a no sugar added dessert, and I avoid sugar substitutes.

August 7, 2015 Update

Yesterday, I stopped by the Captain's Grille to see their new allergy-friendly menus, which list options for people with gluten/wheat, milk, egg, soy, peanut/tree nut, and fish/shellfish allergies.

Gluten free lunch options include: salad of melon & serrano, wedged romaine salad, seared tuna, New England-style lobster roll, Angus chuck burger, grilled chicken sandwich, and grilled chicken salad.  The angel food cake and house-made gelato are listed as gluten/wheat friendly desserts.  Gluten free options on the allergy-friendly kids' lunch menu include: baked fish of the day, grilled chicken strips, grilled shrimp skewer, grilled beef kabobs, french fries, ice cream sundae, and the frozen yogurt & berry push-pop.  The pan-roasted salmon I ordered back in April is not listed as a gluten/wheat friendly option, probably because of the fregola it is served with, which is not gluten free.  If you are interested in this dish, or any others that might be able to be modified to be gluten free, be sure to ask to speak to a chef.
