Tangaroa Terrace & White Water Snacks - Disneyland Resort

After we had breakfast at Steakhouse 55, we stopped at Tangaroa Terrace, a quick service restaurant at the Disneyland Hotel.

I looked at their allergy-friendly menus for breakfast and lunch.  If they have a separate dinner menu, it should be the same as the lunch menu, because they serve the same food for lunch and dinner.

Sarris Candies Gluten Free Milk Chocolate Mini Pretzels

When we were living in Pittsburgh, before I was diagnosed with celiac disease, I loved Sarris Candies chocolate covered pretzels.  I have eaten many varieties of gluten-filled and gluten free chocolate covered pretzels in my life, but Sarris is the best.

I love the taste of their milk chocolate, and each pretzel is coated in just the right amount of chocolate.  In general, I love chocolate covered pretzels, because they satisfy my craving for something salty and sweet.

Gluten Free at Downtown Disney - Disneyland Resort

We spent the first five days of our Christmas Break this year at Disneyland Resort.

Four out of the five nights of our trip, we had dinner at Downtown Disney, which I accidentally kept calling Disney Springs, because of the name change at Disney World.  The restaurants we dined at were not owned and operated by Disney, so they did not have the typical allergy-friendly menus you see at quick service and table service restaurants in the theme parks.

Gluten Free at Disneyland Park

Last week, we spent five days at Disneyland Resort.  You can read my food reviews from Disney California Adventure here.

We could only go in one park per day with our tickets, and we spent three of our days at Disneyland Resort at Disneyland Park.  Our first full day, we had breakfast at Carnation Cafe on Main Street U.S.A.  You can read my review, and view Carnation Cafe's allergy-friendly menus here.

Gluten Free at Disney California Adventure

Last week, we spent two days at Disney California Adventure.  We did not make any advance dining reservations, but they are available for Carthay Circle Restaurant, Wine Country Trattoria, and Ariel's Grotto, the three table service restaurants in the park.

Our first day at Disney California Adventure, we decided to have lunch at Carthay Circle Lounge, which is in the same building as Carthay Circle Restaurant.

Triple Oak Bakery Gluten Free Baklava

About a week and a half before our Christmas break started, I ordered gluten free Baklava from Triple Oak Bakery on Etsy.  I first learned about Triple Oak Bakery, a 100% gluten free bakery in Virginia, from Shirley at Gluten Free Easily.

Sadly, my baklava was delivered the day after we left for our trip to Disneyland and Las Vegas, so it sat in our school's mail room for over a week.

Roy's at Pebble Beach

On Christmas day, we had a late lunch at Roy's at Pebble Beach.  Right after we moved to California in July, we had reservations to celebrate our 15th anniversary at Roy's, but ended up cancelling them because of smoke from the Soberanes Fire.  We chose this restaurant to celebrate our anniversary, because Roy's was our favorite restaurant on our honeymoon in Hawaii.  We ate at Roy's on Kauai and Maui, and always had their amazing chocolate souffle, which is described as a flourless chocolate cake with a molten hot center, raspberry coulis, and vanilla bean ice cream.  I knew the souffle was gluten free, because I have eaten it at Roy's in Orlando, and it is listed on Roy's gluten free menu, which you can view here.

Our meal started with complimentary edamame, which my family devoured before I  had a chance to ask if it was gluten free.  Right away, we did ask our server about the chocolate souffle, because it takes a while to prepare.  Imagine my disappointment when I found out that they do not use the same recipe as other Roy's restaurants, and that it has flour in it, so it is not gluten free.  It turns out that the Roy's at Pebble Beach is an independent restaurant that is run by Pebble Beach Resorts.  They did not have a gluten free menu, but gluten free options were listed on their regular menu.

Zoey Brooke's Gluten Free Bakery - Bakersfield, CA

Yesterday, we stopped at Zoey Brooke's Gluten Free Bakery in Bakersfield, California on our drive back from Las Vegas.

I had special ordered some items in advance, and we also needed a place to have lunch.

Steakhouse 55 - Disneyland

Before we left Disneyland to drive to Las Vegas, we had breakfast at Steakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel.

The theming of the restaurant is Old Hollywood, and I loved the picture of Walt Disney at the entrance.

Carnation Cafe - Disneyland Park

On Saturday, we had breakfast at Carnation Cafe on Main Street U.S.A. at Disneyland Park.  I made advance dining reservations for 10:20, so we could ride some of our favorite attractions before the park got too crowded.  Thankfully, the Candy Cane Inn, where we were staying, offers a free breakfast, so I had two Chobani blueberry blended Greek yogurts to tide me over.

Carnation Cafe does have an allergy-friendly menu that lists gluten free, milk free, egg free, soy free, nut free, and fish/shellfish free options.  Gluten-friendly breakfast options include the pancake breakfast, Classic Eggs Benedict, Oscar's Choice: All-American Breakfast, Mickey-shaped waffles, ham and cheese omelet, spinach and tomato egg white frittata, and sides of hickory-smoked bacon, sausage links, and seasonal fruit.

Bahama Breeze Island Grille

Over Thanksgiving Break, we traveled to our hometown of Pittsburgh.  While we were there, my husband's family asked us if we wanted to meet them for dinner at the Bahama Breeze Island Grille in Robinson Township.  Bahama Breeze, which serves Caribbean cuisine, is a restaurant chain owned by Darden Restaurants.  Earlier this year, I had a great meal at Seasons 52, which is also run by Darden.

Bahama Breeze does have a gluten sensitive menu, which has the typical disclaimer I am used to seeing, even at Disney World.  No one is going to guarantee you a gluten free meal, unless it is a 100% gluten free restaurant.  The key for me is that restaurants take appropriate precautions to keep my food safe.  When I started asking my usual round of questions about food preparation, our server said he would get a manager.  The manager I spoke to told me that my food would be prepared in a separate area of the kitchen, and that she would make it herself if I would like.

Gluten Free Panettone

Pre-celiac, I loved panettone, an Italian sweet bread that is traditionally served at Christmas.  My favorite was a panettone filled with candied chestnuts from Williams-Sonoma.

I was so excited to find gluten free panettone for the first time last year at Bottega dei Sapori at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Deanna's Gluten Free

Restaurants at Disney World use several brands of gluten free dinner rolls, hamburger buns and bread, including Deanna's Gluten Free, Local Oven, Ener-G, and Udi's.  When heated well, Deanna's Gluten Free dinner rolls and hamburger buns are my favorite, because they have the best taste and texture.  Deanna's Gluten Free used to be called Gluten Not Included, so Disney chefs used to refer to her products as GNI.

Last week, I ordered dinner rolls and flatbread from Deanna's Gluten Free.  The allergen free dinner rolls contain brown rice flour, tapioca flour, flax meal, evaporated cane juice, yeast, palm oil, filtered water, sea salt, xanthan gum, and natural enzymes.  They are non-GMO, gluten free, dairy free, egg free, soy free, nut free, and corn free.

Casa de Tamales - Fresno, California

Last weekend, we went to Fresno, California to see Cirque du Soleil's TORUK - The First Flight, which is inspired by James Cameron's Avatar.

Before the show, we had lunch at Casa de Tamales, and visited the amazing Forestiere Underground Gardens.

Seville Tapas - Half Moon Bay

Earlier today, we had lunch at Seville Tapas in Half Moon Bay, California, about 30 minutes south of San Francisco.

I chose Seville Tapas after reading restaurant reviews on the Find Me Gluten Free app.

Red Apple Lipstick

I spent all of my teen years in the 1980s, the decade of big hair and lots of makeup.  As a history teacher, I enjoy teaching my students about the 80s, and I love watching The Goldbergs, one of the best comedies on TV, but I am anti-80s when it comes to fashion and makeup.  I no longer use hairspray, foundation, blush, eyeliner, rainbow colored mascaras, lipstick, or blue eye shadow.

The only makeup I have worn in the last 20 years is mascara and lip gloss, but I had to give up mascara after we moved to Florida, because every time I wore it, my eyes would be red and itchy for days afterwards.  I was diagnosed with celiac disease right before our move to Orlando 8 years ago, so I tried Tarte mascara, which does not contain gluten, in the hopes that my eyes would tolerate it.  With Tarte, I still ended up with red and itchy eyes.

Tiffins - Disney's Animal Kingdom

Shortly before we left Orlando to move to California, Tiffins opened in Disney's Animal Kingdom.  Tiffins is a signature dining restaurant featuring African, Asian and Latin cuisine.

We dined on small plates at neighboring Nomad Lounge in June, which you can read about here.  After looking at Tiffins' allergy-friendly menu, I am excited to dine there when we visit Disney World next November.

Blaze Pizza

Earlier today, we had lunch at Blaza Pizza in Gold River, California on our way home from Lake Tahoe.  I have wanted to try their pizza since reading my friend Sarah's review on her blog Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free at WDW.  Shortly after we moved to California, a Blaze Pizza opened in Disney Springs, and I have heard from Sarah and others that they do a great job with special diets.

All the employees I spoke to at Blaze Pizza were incredibly friendly and willing to help.  I was told that they change their gloves, and press gluten free pizza dough on a dedicated pizza press.  When I expressed concern about cross contamination of their toppings as employees stick their gloves in them after touching gluten-filled dough, they were happy to get fresh toppings from the back or under the counter for me.  I did not have to worry about flour in the air, because they do not toss any of their pizzas, and I did not see them dusting their regular dough either.

Mission Heirloom - Berkeley, California

Update - this restaurant is permanently closed

Last weekend, we drove up to Berkeley to see the University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley, and to explore the university that is so famous for its protests in the 1960s.

Using the Find Me Gluten Free App, we found Mission Heirloom, a 100% gluten free restaurant in Berkeley, a short distance from campus.

California Pizza Kitchen

This post was last updated October 15, 2017

Earlier today, we had lunch at California Pizza Kitchen in Monterey, California.  CPK is one of our favorite chain restaurants, and we used to dine at their Waterford Lakes and Millenia Mall locations when we lived in Orlando.  You can read my previous reviews here.

I rarely eat gluten free pizza at restaurants, because of cross contamination concerns, but I don't have to worry when I go to California Pizza Kitchen.  In 2013, they introduced four gluten free pizzas that are safe for people with celiac disease - the original BBQ chicken pizza, pepperoni, mushroom pepperoni sausage, and margherita.

P.F. Chang's

This post was last updated May 25, 2019

Yesterday, we spent the morning at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.  While we were hiking, we called the P.F. Chang's in Monterey to make a reservation for lunch, because I was in the mood for Chinese food.

I was shocked to see that P.F. Chang's now has a separate gluten free menu.  On past visits, which you can read about here, gluten free options were listed in their regular menu.

Kara's Cupcakes - California

Three years ago, we took our first family trip to California.  On that vacation, I tried Sprinkles and Kara's gluten free cupcakes for the first time.  I am a fan of Sprinkles gluten free red velvet cupcakes, which you can read about here, but I have always enjoyed Kara's gluten free chocolate velvet cupcakes a little more.

Just a few days after moving to California in July, we stopped at the Kara's Cupcakes in San Jose after having lunch at Maggiano's Little Italy.

In-N-Out Burger - California

Since we moved to California in July, we have been hearing about In-N-Out Burger, so we drove to Gilroy today, just to try their famous burgers, french fries, and milkshakes.  I had read a lot of positive reviews about  dining gluten free at In-N-Out, but I also checked out their allergen information online.

In-N-Out Burger, which has a pretty small menu, has a good number of gluten free options - any of their burgers made Protein Style with a lettuce wrap, french fries, and chocolate, strawberry and vanilla shakes.

Asian Box - California

Last updated March 3, 2019

Yesterday, we spent the day in San Francisco.  We started with breakfast at Mariposa, a 100% gluten free bakeshop in the Ferry Building.  After stuffing ourselves full of gluten free almond bear claws, cinnamon buns, Pain au Chocolat, and a yummy tart, we walked down to Pier 39 to see the sea lions, then took a Gold Rush walking tour of the city.  Originally, our plan was to have an early dinner at Pica Pica Arepa Kitchen, a 100% gluten free restaurant featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, that we first dined at three years ago on our last visit to San Francisco.

As the day wore on, and we talked about having a lighter dinner, we decided to go to Asian Box, which was within walking distance of our Gold Rush tour.

Cindy's Waterfront at the Monterey Bay Aquarium

The last weekend in July, we met our friends and former neighbors from Orlando at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

I did some research before we went, and found out that there are two restaurants inside the aquarium - the Cafe, a counter service restaurant, and Cindy's Waterfront, a table service restaurant.  The Cafe menu says that they have gluten free options, but I thought it might be more relaxing, and safer when it comes to cross contamination, if we ate at Cindy's Waterfront.

P*DE*Q Chocolate Brazilian Cheese Bread

When my husband had his job interview in California over Spring Break, we stopped at Nob Hill Foods in Watsonville to check out their selection of gluten free products.  I was excited to find P*DE*Q chocolate Brazilian cheese bread in the freezer section, but I could not buy it that day, because I had no way to cook it while we were in California, or take it back to Orlando.

Chef Art Smith's Homecoming - Disney Springs

Disney Springs has recently added some amazing new restaurants, like D-Luxe Burger and Frontera Cocina.

For weeks, I have been seeing this sign that Chef Art Smith's Homecoming is opening this summer.

Frontera Cocina - Disney Springs

This post was last updated June 17, 2017

Earlier today, we had lunch at Frontera Cocina, which officially opened yesterday in the Town Center neighborhood of Disney Springs.

Frontera Cocina by Chef Rick Bayless features gourmet Mexican cuisine.  It is managed by the same restaurant group that operates the restaurants in Disney's Coronado Springs Resort and the Mexico Pavilion in Epcot.  Because they are not Disney-owned and operated, none of them have allergy-friendly menus, but I have found all of their restaurants do an amazing job with special diets.

Craft Kafe - St. Petersburg, Florida

On Saturday, my husband and I drove to St. Petersburg to have dinner at Fresh Kitchen, and see the Chilhuly Collection and The Dali Museum.  After reading reviews for Craft Kafe on the Find Me Gluten Free app, we decided to stop there for lunch.

Craft Kafe is a 100% gluten free artisan coffee house and bakery.  They were pretty busy when we arrived at 11:00, so I was happy we managed to find a table inside.  Outdoor seating is also available.

California Grill - Disney's Contemporary Resort

Last weekend, my husband and I had dinner at California Grill at Disney's Contemporary Resort.

California Grill, a signature dining restaurant, has amazing views of Walt Disney World from their location on the 15th floor of the Contemporary Resort, and it is a great spot to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks.  We dined early, but you can bring your receipt back to the check-in desk for reentry to see the fireworks.  That was our plan, but the weather was so terrible Saturday night, we decided to go home after dinner.

Fresh Kitchen - Orlando, Tampa, St. Pete, and Sarasota

2018 Update: Fresh Kitchen now has 2 locations in Orlando - Waterford Lakes and Orlando's SoDo neighborhood, which is not too far from the theme parks.

Yesterday, I met my best friend Tina for lunch in Tampa, Florida.  We considered going to Columbia Restaurant, which we both really enjoy, but then I found Fresh Kitchen on the Find Me Gluten Free app, and we decided to give it a try.

Fresh Kitchen, which has locations in Tampa, Sarasota, and St. Pete, is a 100% gluten free fast casual restaurant.

Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar - Disney Springs

On Friday, my husband and I had dinner at Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar at The Landing in Disney Springs before seeing La Nouba.  I first dined there on opening day last fall, which you can read about here.

The restaurant, which is described on Disney's website as a "1940s airplane hangar turned dive bar," is themed around Jock Lindsey, Indiana Jones' pilot in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Gluten Free in Hilton Head - 2016

On the spur of the moment, we decided to go to Hilton Head Island last week to visit my aunt and uncle, who were staying at Marriott's Barony Beach Club.  My daughters and I spent 6 nights with them, then moved to Hilton Head Marriott Resort & Spa for 2 nights before we drove back to Orlando.  My extended family has been vacationing on Hilton Head Island every year since I was in 4th grade.  You can read my Hilton Head dining reviews from last summer here.

While staying at Barony, we had a kitchen, so we ate breakfast at my aunt and uncle's timeshare every day.

Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop - Disney Springs

After we moved to Orlando in 2008, Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop in Disney Springs became one of our favorite dessert spots at Disney World.  My husband and I loved to order a scoop of vanilla ice cream with their amazing milk chocolate hot fudge.

On our trip to Disneyland three years ago, I did not pass up the chance to stop at Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop at Disney California Adventure Park.

Wednesday, June 15, 2016

Hotto Potto - Orlando

A couple of weeks ago, we had dinner with our school's international students and their host families at Hotto Potto on Semoran Boulevard near Baldwin Park.  They also have a restaurant on Aloma Avenue in Winter Park.

I don't particularly love dining at restaurants without a gluten free menu, but the employee I spoke to before we were seated was very knowledgeable about gluten free options.

Nomad Lounge - Disney's Animal Kingdom

This post was last updated June 13, 2017

Last Friday, we had dinner at Nomad Lounge at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Nomad Lounge is located next to Tiffins, Disney's newest signature dining restaurant.

gfJules Pizza Crust Mix

One of the foods I missed the most after my celiac diagnosis was gluten-filled pizza.  Pre-celiac, I enjoyed eating pizza in restaurants, and I loved the homemade pizza my husband's Italian grandmother used to make.  I gave up on making pizza at home for several years, because all the pizza mixes and doughs I tried were mediocre at best.  I was excited when I discovered Against the Grain Gourmet pesto pizza, and I occasionally make pizza with their pizza shells, when I can find them in local stores.  Shortly after I started my blog, I started making pizza with Chebe Original Cheese Bread Mix, which you can read about here.  I love pizza made with Chebe, because it is easy to make, it's grain free, and it tastes great, but at times, I craved pizza with a more traditional pizza crust, like I used to eat pre-celiac.

A couple of months ago, one of my blog readers convinced me that I had to try gfJules pizza crust mix, so I ordered the value box online, along with some gfJules gluten free all-purpose flour, which is the key ingredient in my Easter Bread Buns recipe.

Ample HIlls Creamery - Disney's BoardWalk

Earlier this month, Ample Hills Creamery, which is based in New York, opened up a shop on Disney's BoardWalk.

We love ice cream, so we were very excited to check out Disney's newest ice cream parlor.  Before we arrived, I did some research on Ample Hills Creamery's website.  On their Frequently Asked Questions page, they state that their ice cream base is gluten free, but their flavors with cookies, cake, and beer are not.  They have at least one dairy free & vegan sorbet available at all their stores.  If you have a nut allergy, they note that they do their best to avoid cross contamination, but caution that their ice cream is not made in a nut free kitchen.

Amorette's Patisserie - Disney Springs

I was so excited when Disney announced that Amorette's Patisserie was opening in the new Town Center neighborhood of Disney Springs in May.  The main reason I was looking forward to visiting this new shop is that they sell gluten friendly cake, and other sweet treats.  You can check out pictures of their beautiful creations on Disney's website here.

After a disappointing experience at The Daily Poutine in Disney Springs last Saturday, we headed to Amorette's Patisserie.  After reading my friend Sarah's review on her blog Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free at WDW, I was not expecting a good experience at Amorette's either.

The Daily Poutine - Disney Springs

Last Saturday, we headed to Disney Springs to have lunch at D-Luxe Burger, but it was closed for a private party when we arrived.  We decided to explore the recently opened Town Center neighborhood of Disney Springs while we waited for D-Luxe Burger to open to the public.

When I saw The Daily Poutine, a quick service restaurant in Town Center, we reconsidered our lunch plans, because my friend Sarah from Gluten-Free & Dairy-Free at WDW had a good experience dining there opening week.  Poutine is a Canadian dish featuring french fries topped with cheese curds and gravy.  The Daily Poutine also offers Latin, Italian, and French-inspired versions of poutine.

D-Luxe Burger - Disney Springs

Yesterday, we had lunch at D-Luxe Burger, which opened in the Town Center neighborhood of Disney Springs last Sunday.

D-Luxe Burger is a quick service restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.  After you order, you are given a pager to let you know when your food is ready to be picked up.  They currently do not have an allergy-friendly menu, but a chef quickly came out to speak to me about gluten free options.  He told me that any of the burgers could be made gluten free, and the fresh-cut fries are made in dedicated fryers, so they are safe.

Wednesday, May 18, 2016

Rose & Crown - Epcot

Earlier this month, we had lunch at Rose & Crown Dining Room in the United Kingdom Pavilion at Epcot.

Rose & Crown has an allergy-friendly menu that lists options for people with gluten/wheat, milk, egg, soy, fish/shellfish, and peanut/tree nut allergies.

Sunday, May 15, 2016

Sprinkles - Disney Springs

Earlier today, Town Center officially opened at Disney Springs.  This neighborhood features new retail locations and dining options like Sprinkles Cupcakes and D-Luxe Burger.  More shops and restaurants will be opening in Town Center in the coming months.

As soon as Town Center opened, we headed straight for Sprinkles Cupcakes, which is located across the bridge from Morimoto Asia and Raglan Road.

Christopher's Kitchen - Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

Last weekend, we had lunch at Christopher's Kitchen in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Christopher's Kitchen is a great choice for health conscious diners, vegans and vegetarians, because their mission is to serve certified organic plant based cuisine.

Pork Chops Milanese

I have always loved breaded pork chops and chicken cutlets, especially if they are coated in a mixture of bread crumbs and grated cheese before they are fried.

Locally, you can enjoy gluten free Pork Chop alla Milanese at Trattoria al Forno on Disney's BoardWalk, but I prefer the version I make at home.

Tuesday, April 26, 2016

Melinda's Gluten Free - Capitola, CA

Over Spring Break, we took a trip to California.  Lucky for me, there was an amazing gluten free bakery about a block away from our hotel in Capitola.  If you are in the Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay area, you have to pay Melinda's Gluten Free Specialty Bakery a visit.

Melinda's sells gluten free bread and a variety of baked goods, and is a great place to eat at for breakfast or lunch.  They are a peanut free facility, and many of their baked goods are dairy free.

Sunday, April 24, 2016

Wahlburgers - Orlando

Earlier today, we had lunch at Wahlburgers in Downtown Orlando, which is located at the corner of Church Street and Orange Avenue.

Wahlburgers does not have a gluten free menu, but on their website, they mention that they have a lot of delicious gluten free options, which they would love to tell you about if you ask.  When we entered the restaurant, we were told that we could choose quick service, where you order at the counter, or table service with a server taking our order.  Because I had so many questions, we opted for table service today, but in the future, we would probably choose quick service, which has tables on the opposite side of the restaurant.

Afternoon Tea at the Garden View Tea Room - Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

Yesterday, we celebrated our daughters' birthdays at the Garden View Tea Room at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.

My husband and I had afternoon tea at the Garden View Tea Room over 10 years ago, before I was diagnosed with celiac, and before we moved to Orlando.  I remember enjoying it, so I was excited to take our twins there for their birthday.

Friday, April 15, 2016

Siggi's Yogurt

I first tried Siggi's yogurt on our recent trip to California over Spring Break.  I bought a box of Siggi's low-fat blueberry yogurt tubes at the Whole Foods in Capitola, because I was looking for healthy grab-and-go snacks, and I have always loved Icelandic skyr yogurt.

Sadly, I have not found Siggi's yogurt tubes anywhere in Orlando, but I bought several varieties of their yogurt at the Whole Foods in Winter Park when we got home.

Provisions & Buzz Co. - Baldwin Park

Last Friday, we had dinner at Provisions & Buzz Co. in Baldwin Park.  The restaurant used to be Jack's Steakhouse, but it was rebranded late last year, and features a new menu and a beautiful new interior.

We arrived right when the restaurant opened at 5:00, because I prefer to eat out when restaurants are not busy.  When I asked our server about gluten free options, she sent out their general manager, who just happens to have celiac.
