Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen - Magic Kingdom

Every time we visit Disney World, we have lunch at Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen, the Jungle Cruise themed restaurant in Adventureland at Disney's Magic Kingdom.

Skipper Canteen, which is staffed by the crew of the fun loving Jungle Navigation Co. LTD, is a table service restaurant featuring Asian, South American, and African cuisine.

We love the service, the decor, and the food at Skipper Canteen, and it is our favorite restaurant to dine at in the Magic Kingdom.

Skipper Canteen's allergy-friendly menu lists options for people with gluten/wheat, milk, egg, soy, fish/shellfish, and peanut/tree nut allergies. If gluten/wheat is listed under a dish on the menu, it does not contain gluten. I was given a paper menu on our first visit, but on my birthday, our server told us that everything on the menu can be made gluten free except the cachapas appetizer, and a few desserts.

On our first visit, I shared an order of the Falls Family Falafel with my family. This appetizer is always consistently good, and I love the edamame hummus it is served with.

I am a fan of the Dr. Falls' Signature Grilled Steak and the Sustainable Fish, but on both visits this summer, I ordered my favorite entree at Skipper Canteen, the Tastes Like Chicken Because It Is. This crispy fried chicken is naturally gluten free, and it is served with jasmine rice and seasonal vegetables. I find the chili glaze that comes with this dish to be too overpowering and often salty, so I asked for it on the side, along with a side of sweet and sour sauce, which is way better with the chicken and rice.

We were super sad that two of our favorites at Skipper Canteen were off the menu this summer. We love the secret menu Brazilian cheese bread, and the Quick Sand dessert, which you can read about in my previous review.

I was happy though, to see another interesting gluten free dessert on the menu. Panna-Connie's Congo Lime Delight features lime panna cotta served with mango-lime sorbet, fresh fruit, and a Brazil nut cookie, which I think was the crumble on top. Overall, a very good dessert, and a fun mix of flavors and textures.

We had originally only planned to visit the Magic Kingdom twice during my 50th birthday trip, but the day before my birthday, I switched our theme park reservation from Hollywood Studios to the Magic Kingdom, because our best park days were definitely the ones we spent in the Magic Kingdom, and I wanted to have my birthday lunch at Skipper Canteen. We love the Magic Kingdom, but normally, wait times for attractions can be very long, but that was not the case during the pandemic in July. The longest we waited for any ride on our three visits was 35 minutes for Splash Mountain.

On my birthday, we were seated in the largest dining room in Skipper Canteen, which is my favorite place to sit, and we were happy with the social distancing between tables.

My family decided to get on the Tastes Like Chicken Because It Is bandwagon, and everybody ordered the same entree. My daughters and husband loved it as much as I do.

Here is is folks, the back side of the Tastes Like Chicken Because It Is! Sorry, I just can't help myself...lol.  We all ordered sides of the sweet and sour sauce on this visit, and skipped the chili glaze. That breading on the chicken is just so heavenly! I know a lot of people like to go to 50's Prime Time Cafe in Disney's Hollywood Studios for gluten free fried chicken, but the fried chicken at Skipper Canteen is so much better, and it is naturally gluten free, and there is no need to pre-order it.

For dessert, I decided to switch things up a bit. The Monkey Bites, a dessert on the kids menu, is gluten free, but I am not a fan of chocolate covered bananas, so I asked our server if I could get the Monkey Bites with caramelized bananas instead, which are part of the the Kungaloosh dessert. My modified dessert consisted of caramelized bananas, whipped cream, gluten free pistachio sponge cake, and mini meringues. The meringues, and the bananas with the whipped cream were delicious. The cake was a little dry, but also good. Overall, a fun birthday dessert!

I thought I would share with you some photos I took of Cinderella Castle, which is in the middle of a makeover.

I am not sure I love the new colors, but it definitely makes a statement!

I am so glad I got to spend my 50th birthday at the Magic Kingdom. I definitely had a magical day!
