Azul Latin Kitchen - Lake Tahoe

Yesterday, we had lunch at Azul Latin Kitchen at Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe.  This is our second visit to Lake Tahoe since moving to California.

Azul Latin Kitchen has a gluten free menu with plenty of options to choose from.

Their chips are made in a shared fryer, so I asked for corn tortillas to go with the jicama pico and queso fundido we ordered.

The jicama pico at Azul Latin Kitchen is amazing, but next time, I will probably skip the queso fundido.  My whole family agreed that we like the taste, but we wish it had a thicker consistency.

For an entree, I chose the carnitas pork bowl with green rice, black beans, guacamole, slow cooked egg, spicy harissa, pickled peppers, and cilantro.  My daughters ordered the same dish, but minus the spicy harissa.  They split one entree, which was plenty of food for them, and they were both happy with their choice.

I love everything about the carnitas pork bowl, but the jicama pico I topped it with takes it to the next level with the crunchiness of the jicama and the sweetness of the pineapple.  The harissa adds a level of spice to the dish that I really enjoy, but it is not overpowering.

When we dined at Azul in October, we ordered the Azul guacamole and jicama pico as starters.

The guacamole is great, but I did not order it again yesterday, choosing to try the queso fundido instead.

In October, my carnitas pork bowl was served with corn instead of guacamole.  Both times, it was delicious.  I especially love when I get a bite with one of the sweety drop miniature peppers.  My husband raved about his Thai curry taco yesterday, which is an option on  Azul's gluten free menu.

Azul Latin Kitchen also has a dairy free menu that you can cross reference with the gluten free menu if you have both dietary restrictions.  The jicama pico and the carnitas pork bowl are both gluten free and dairy free.

On Azul's website, which you can view here, they have the following statement:

"Most of our menu items can be prepared Gluten Free.  Our chips are corn and contain no gluten, but are cooked in a fryer with items that contain gluten.  We take gluten allergies seriously.  We use special preparation that requires extra cook time and attention.  Please specify if you have an allergy or if it's a preference.  We are happy to accommodate!"

Azul Latin Kitchen is currently my favorite place to dine in Lake Tahoe.  What are yours?
