Gluten Free Beignets at Scat Cat's Club Cafe

Over Thanksgiving Break, we set a family record for the number of times we visited Disney's Port Orleans Resort - French Quarter in one week.

The last few months we lived in Orlando, our Saturday morning tradition was to stop at Port Orleans - French Quarter to eat gluten free beignets with dipping sauces for breakfast, before heading to a Disney theme park. We had been eating gluten free beignets at Disney World about once a month for years, but once the dipping sauces were introduced, we wanted to have beignets for breakfast every week.

In the past, gluten free beignets had to be ordered at Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory, the quick service restaurant at Disney's Port Orleans Resort-French Quarter, but now, they are available at neighboring Scat Cat's Club Cafe from 6:00 am until midnight.

I really love the change, because the lines at Scat Cat's Club Cafe were short every time we stopped in, I did not have to brave the crowds in Sassagoula, and there was no need to wait to talk to a chef. Every time we ordered gluten free beignets at Scat Cat's, the cast member at the register wrote our order down on a piece of paper, and delivered it to the kitchen. My beignets were always delivered to me by a chef, and there was no guessing whether they were gluten free or not, because they were not Mickey-shaped. My daughters have tried the gluten-filled Mickey beignets, but prefer the gluten free beignets.

The first night we stopped in, we asked for the secret menu gingerbread beignets, which have gingerbread spice mixed in with the powdered sugar. Pumpkin spice is another seasonal flavor you can ask for in the fall, but they were not available over Thanksgiving Break.

I highly recommend the gingerbread beignets if you are at Disney World around Christmas. My whole family loved them.

While my husband waited for our beignets, I walked next door to Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory to order a beignet cheeseburger.

Look for the food station with the sign for special diets orders, and ask a cast member to speak to a chef.

I ordered my beignet burger without cheese, lettuce, and the pickled onions it is usually served with. All I wanted to try on it was the bacon jam, which was delicious. I know it sounds weird to eat a hamburger on a beignet, but the combination was pretty incredible. I would never get a burger on a bun again if I could have it on a beignet instead. I really enjoyed the burger itself, which was nice and thick, and the steak fries it was served with were really good too.

The first morning that we visited Scat Cat's Club Cafe for breakfast, we ordered 12 beignets to share, with several sides of strawberry sauce and chicory chocolate ganache.

In the past, some of my blog readers were worried about cross contamination of the the chicory chocolate ganache, but it is no longer being served near the gluten-filled beignets like it was at Sassagoula.

When my daughters and I had breakfast with my friend Sarah from Gluten Free & Dairy Free at WDW a few days later, I asked about the specialty beignets, and was told that all three of them could be made gluten free.

Specialty beignets are just regular beignets with special toppings, but they do not come in orders of three or six like the traditional beignets. Pictured above is a gluten-filled chocolate beignet from the display case.

We all loved the cinnamon-sugar specialty beignet, which I will probably order every time we stop in for breakfast from now on. It tasted like a cinnamon sugar fried donut.

All of my traditional and gingerbread beignets were accidentally put in to go containers, so I took photos of Sarah's beignets instead. Looking at them, it is hard to tell the difference between the two, but you can definitely taste the difference.

Later that afternoon, we came back with my parents, and my aunt and uncle to have lunch at Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory.

There was no way I was leaving Disney World without having another beignet burger. This time around, I asked for the pickled onion, which was served on the side. Lettuce was accidentally put on my burger, but it was easy to remove. My burger was so good with the bacon jam, I did not even put the pickled onion on it. My aunt, who is lactose intolerant, had a gluten free beignet burger without toppings, and a side of fruit. She really enjoyed it too.

Shrimp & grits are another great option at Sassagoula for lunch and dinner. You can read more about them here.

Before we headed to the airport to fly back to California, we stopped at Scat Cat's Club Cafe one last time for beignets with dipping sauces.

I also decided to try the raspberry specialty beignet, which none of us liked enough to order again on future visits. The glaze and the sprinkles were just too sweet for me for breakfast.

Again, everyone loved the cinnamon-sugar, but we decided not to try the chocolate specialty beignet, because we love the chicory chocolate ganache at Scat Cat's.

The gluten free beignets at Scat Cat's Club Cafe are also dairy free and egg free. You can view the recipe in my original post about gluten free beignets at Disney's Port Orleans Resort - French Quarter here.

I have not had a beignet sundae since we moved to California, but I will definitely have to order one again when we return to Disney World for my 50th birthday in July.

Earlier today, I asked my blog readers on my Facebook page if they could pick only one, would they choose beignets or churros at Disney World. The majority choose beignets, and so would I, though I do love the gluten free churros at Nomad Lounge in Disney's Animal Kingdom.

By the way, if you are wondering what a beignet is and how it is pronounced, a beignet is deep fried dough covered in powdered sugar, and it is pronounced bin-yay. Beignets are popular in New Orleans, and are traditionally prepared to order, so they can be eaten hot, right out of the fryer. At Scat Cat's Club Cafe, the gluten free beignets are prepared in a dedicated fryer, so there is no need to worry about cross contamination with their adorable Mickey beignets. You can use Disney Dining Plan snack credits for the specialty beignets, and for orders of three traditional beignets. We were able to use our Tables in Wonderland card to get a 20% discount at Scat Cat's Club Cafe.

What are your favorite gluten free options at Scat Cat's Club Cafe and Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory at Disney's Port Orleans Resort - French Quarter?
