This morning, my daughters and I had breakfast at the Captain's Grille at Disney's Yacht Club Resort.
The Captain's Grille, a table service restaurant, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and serves American fare in a nautical setting with a New England yacht club theme. You can read my lunch review here.
The Captain's Grille does not yet have the allergy-friendly menus that are being introduced from April to September at all Disney quick service and table service restaurants, but Chef David quickly came out to discuss gluten free options with me.
I asked him if he could make me gluten free Mickey waffles with the toppings that are served with the dark chocolate waffles on the menu - dried cherry compote, espresso-mascarpone cream, chocolate shavings, and a choice of bacon or sausage. Only the chocolate shavings were not a safe option. I loved the presentation of my Mickey waffles, and the espresso-mascarpone cream and the dried cherry compote were amazing.
The only problem was the waffles themselves, which were made with Bob's Red Mill mix. Waffles made with Bob's Red Mill at Disney World tend to be much heavier than the ones made with Cup4Cup, Namaste, or a combination of Bob's and Namaste. Some Disney restaurants, like Trattoria al Forno, use Bob's Red Mill mix, and make great Mickey waffles with it. The toppings are the only thing that saved my waffles at the Captain's Grille, and made them edible. There was nothing light and fluffy about these waffles, and they were a little lacking in flavor.
I am not sure why, but I ordered turkey bacon with my waffles this morning, which I later regretted when I saw my daughters' bacon. My turkey bacon was good, but sometimes I just want regular bacon dipped in syrup.
My girls both loved their gluten-filled dark chocolate waffles with espresso-mascarpone cream and chocolate shavings. Neither one was too interested in trying the dried cherry compote, even though they both like cherries.
The next time I am in the mood for waffles with espresso-mascarpone cream, I will probably head to Trattoria al Forno on Disney's BoardWalk instead of the Captain's Grill, because they make better gluten free Mickey waffles.
August 7, 2015 Update
Yesterday, I stopped by the Captain's Grille to see their new allergy-friendly menus, which list options for people with gluten/wheat, milk, egg, soy, peanut/tree nut, and fish/shellfish allergies.
Gluten free options for breakfast include: seasonal fruit arrangement with allergy-friendly muffin, smoked salmon with toasted allergy-friendly bagel, tailored eggs, tailored omelet, pancakes, Mickey waffles, and the petite strip loin with eggs. Gluten free kids' meals include the fresh fruit plate, silver dollar pancakes, Mickey waffles, and the egg breakfast.
You can read more about the Captain's Grille, view their menus, and make advance dining reservations on Disney's website here.
What are your favorite gluten free breakfast options at the Captain's Grille?
