Gluten Free in London - Breakfast

Before our British Isles cruise on the Disney Magic, we spent five nights in London at the London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square.  We loved the location, but the room was small, and we had periodic issues with our air conditioner, which was no fun, because it was over 80 degrees the whole time we were in London.

The morning after we arrived, we woke up pretty late and walked over to Selfridges Food Hall to have breakfast.  Beyond Bread, a 100% gluten free bakery with several locations in London, recently replaced the Coori stall in Selfridges.

I chose a cinnamon bun, which was very good, and my husband picked a pain au raisin, which he liked.

My daughter Emma had a chocolate muffin, which she was not thrilled with, but my husband finished it and said it was great.

Our second full day in London, we walked to the Beyond Bread in Islington to have scones for breakfast, only to be told that this location does not carry them.  I was not in the mood for something too sweet, and I was craving fruit, so I ordered a raspberry muffin, which I really enjoyed.  I have heard their chocolate & custard danishes are amazing, but I did not try one.

Our first night in London, I had a light dinner at Beyond Bread at Selfridges, and bought one of their chocolate croissants for dessert.

Check out those layers of pastry!  It was good, but I think I prefer the chocolate croissants I buy at Melinda's Gluten Free near our home in California.  I found the pastry to be a little tough, and wondered if it was like that because it had been made much earlier in the day.

Our third morning in London, we walked over to Selfridges so I could have breakfast, only to find that the Food Hall was not open that early.  I ended up buying a five berry breakfast bowl at Pret a Manger, which has locations all over London.  It has layers of gluten free granola, yogurt, and berry compote.   It was pretty good once I stirred it all together, and I was happy I was able to find something to eat before we headed to Kensington Palace.

The next morning, I ate muffins that I had bought at Beyond Bread the night before, because we wanted to head out early, but they did not keep well overnight.  The blueberry was very dry, and the raspberry was not much better, so on our last day in London, I decided to have fruit from Pret a Manger before we took a train to Dover to board the Disney Magic.

I love fruit, and when we travel, I often feel fruit deprived, so I really enjoyed my all fruit breakfast of pomegranate, blueberries, mango, and kiwi.  Everything was super fresh, and it tided me over until we got to Dover, where I snacked on some bagel chips I had brought from home before we boarded the ship.  I brought The Greater Knead cinnamon raisin bagel chips and several oatmeal cups with me just in case I needed a quick and easy breakfast on our trip, but most of the food I packed, I ended up bringing home.  It is incredibly easy to eat gluten free in London, and they have an impressive number of 100% gluten free restaurants and bakeries.  We never made it to Artisan Gluten Free Bakery, and several others that I found using the Find Me Gluten Free app.

Alexandra from The Gluten Free Suitcase recommended that I try Leon for breakfast, so I was excited to find one of their restaurants at Heathrow Airport the day we flew home after our cruise.  All of their gluten free options were clearly marked on their menu.  I ended up choosing the gluten and dairy free breakfast box with bacon, sausage, a poached egg, sliced avocado, beans, grilled mushrooms, and hash brown bites.  The breakfast meats and saucy beans were my favorites, but I enjoyed everything in the box.

The blueberry elderflower kefir I had was good too, and their carrot apple ginger juice was amazing.

You can view Leon's restaurant locator here.
